π₯π‘ Indigenous Fuel ‘DME’ to Reduce India’s Dependence on LPG Imports
Amid rising global energy concerns, scientists in Pune have introduced a promising alternative fuel called Dimethyl Ether (DME), which could significantly reduce India’s dependence on imported LPG.
India currently imports nearly 60% of its LPG requirements, a major portion of which comes from West Asian countries through sensitive routes like the Hormuz Strait, making supply vulnerable to global disruptions.
Scientists from CSIR and the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune, have jointly developed DME as a domestic alternative. Experts say it can be easily blended with LPG without requiring any changes to existing cylinders or household appliances.
According to researchers, even a 20% blending of DME with LPG could save thousands of crores in foreign exchange annually.
DME can be produced from coal, biomass, and methanol, making it a cleaner and more sustainable fuel option. It is also being explored for use in LPG-powered autorickshaws and diesel generator replacements.
