SEC awaits Govt response on OBC Commission report; Panchayat voter list reaches 72 lakh in J&K
The State Election Commission (SEC) has completed the revision of Panchayat electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir and is now awaiting the government’s response on the OBC Commission report before further steps on local body elections.
According to officials, the final electoral rolls will be published on May 20. The number of voters in Panchayats is set to reach around 72 lakh, showing an increase of about 3.2%. The revision exercise added nearly 3.5 lakh new voters, while around 1.25 lakh names were deleted.
State Election Commissioner Shantmanu said that the revision process has been completed and the final voter list is expected to be released soon.
Meanwhile, the SEC has written to the UT administration seeking a decision on the OBC Commission report submitted in February 2025. Officials said that Panchayat elections are likely to depend on the government’s decision regarding OBC reservation in local bodies.
Currently, reservation is provided for SCs, STs, and women in local body elections.
